iPad Mini Rumor Roundup: 7 Things You Need to Know

During a 2010 earnings call, Steve Jobs predicted that 7-inch tablets were going to be “dead on arrival.”  Jump to 2012,  and small slates like the Kindle Fire and the Nexus 7 have held their own against Apple’s watershed device. As it turns out, at the right price, there is a place in the market for tablets smaller than 10 inches.

Several months ago, the Wall Street Journal reported that Apple was showing select suppliers designs for a device with a 7 to 8-inch display. Since then, iPad Mini rumors have flooded the web, with many speculating on everything from the exact size to the availability date and cost. We’ve rounded up the rumors, and here is the story so far.

9to5 Mac first reported that the iPad Mini will be as thin as the iPod touch and with a thinner bezel on the sides of the display. If that's true, then the ultimate question will be 'how are you going to hold it without obscuring content?' According to calculations done by Daring Fireball's John Gruber, the iPad mini will be about one-thirds thinner than the Nexus 7.

Rumor: HTC’s Windows 8 Phone to Sport 4.3-inch Screen, 8-MP Camera

An XDA-Developer forum-goer who goes by the Twitter handle @Football4PDA has had a busy morning! He started the day by posting a list of alleged specs for the upcoming HTC One X+, but the tech-related tip-offs didn’t end there: @Football4PDA followed up that juicy tidbit with screenshots detailing the look and specs of HTC’s upcoming Windows Phone 8 handset.

That handset has long been rumored to go by the name HTC Accord, but according to @Football4PDA, the final name for the phone is the Windows Phone 8X. If true, we prefer the original.

The tipster also posted a spec sheet of purported specs for the phone, though it’s worth noting that neither alleged name appears in the image itself. The picture says the HTC Accord/ 8X sports a 4.3-inch screen, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 16GB of storage, 1GB of RAM and an 8-megapixel camera capable of taking 1080p HD video and ultra-wide angle pictures. Beats Audio, NFC and a micro-USB port all are onboard.

HTC recently sent out invitations for a big September 19th event, and the styling on the announcement suggests that the company could out a new Windows Phone device that day — but we could be looking too far into things. We’ll just have to wait until then to see if our theory and @Football4PDA’s leaks prove accurate.

Rumor: Nokia to Unveil “Phi” and “Arrow” Windows Phone 8 Phones Sept. 5

Two weeks before a packed September 5th, tidbits about Nokia and Microsoft’s joint event are starting to leak out. According to the Verge’s sources, Nokia is planning to unveil a pair of new Lumia-branded Windows Phone 8 handsets, code-named the Phi and the Arrow.

The Phi is the flagship model and is said to sport a curved glass design similar to the one found on WP7 Lumia phones. Yesterday, WMPowerUser also identified the Nokia Phi by name, citing Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin, who claims the phone will have a 4.7-inch AMOLED display and a microSD card slot. Assuming the reports prove true, it will be an AT&T exclusive.  

The Nokia Arrow sports more modest (yet unidentified) mainstream specs and should pop up at both AT&T and T-Mobile.

Yesterday, we reported that a Nokia Windows Phone 8 handset will make its way to Verizon later this year. The Verge’s sources claim that particular phone — code-named the Atlas — won’t be at the big September 5th gala, but it should be pretty much identical to the Arrow phone being announced.

Rumor: iPad mini Production to Ramp Up Significantly in September

Rumors about a 7-inch iPad mini have been swirling around for a while now; when are we actually going to see the darned thing? Assuming the fabled device is actually in production and not just a figment of our projected desires, it could be cast into the spotlight very, very soon. Tipsters have been whispering that the shrunken-down iPad could be unveiled alongside the iPhone 5 at a September 12th press event, and now, DigiTimes reports that Apple’s suppliers are ramping up the production of the iPad mini’s components.

Citing its usual “sources from the upstream supply chain,” the publication claims that Apple’s suppliers will start pumping out iPad minis at a rate of 4 million a month starting in September; the same sources say that suppliers are currently producing several hundred thousand iPad minis a month.

That aligns with the Wall Street Journal said at the beginning of July; according to that report, Apple suppliers (including LG Display and AU Optronics) were told to be ready to ramp up production on a sub-8-inch tablet in September.

What can we expect when the iPad mini launches? Previous reports from credible sources like Bloomberg and the New York Times have said that the comparatively pint-sized tablet will have a 7.85-inch, standard resolution display with a smaller dock connector sitting between a pair of speakers on the bottom of the slate. Earlier this month, it was reported that the iPad mini could look more like an iPod touch maxi, with a larger bezel on the top and bottom and a smaller bezel on the sides.

Rumor: Apple Wants to Take Cable TV to the Cloud

Apple’s desire to move more concretely into the television arena has long been teased and whispered. Yesterday, even more rumors surfaced, claiming that the Cupertino company is talking to cable providers about developing a new type of set-top “cable-plus” box. Today, the Wall Street Journal outlined Apple’s alleged plans even further with a detailed description of the proposed capabilities for the Apple cable box.

The paper claims that the box is designed to “erase the distinction between live and on-demand content,” starting with a cloud-based DVR-type feature that stores full television episodes as they air and allows cable subscribers to watch any show from the current season on-demand. Separate streaming content deals could bring past seasons of shows to the Apple box. Theoretically, the Apple set-top box could bring you all the past and current episodes of your favorite show from a single, convenient interface.

Speaking of, the WSJ says that the set-top box’s interface could look identical to the icons used by Apple’s iOS devices. The company also allegedly wants to integrate social media into the mix and allow users to stream media from the set-top box to their iOS devices, sort of like a reverse AirPlay.

All in all, it sounds remarkably similar to what Steve Jobs told biographer Walter Isaacson he wanted to do with an Apple television:

“‘I’d like to create an integrated television set that is completely easy to use,’ he told me. ‘It would be seamlessly synced with all of your devices and with iCloud.’ No longer would users have to fiddle with complex remotes for DVD players and cable channels. ‘It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine. I finally cracked it.’”

Of course, things aren’t quite that easy. Even if the rumor turns out to be true, the cable industry and content providers are said to be hesitant to agree to such a drastic change to the status quo — or to give Apple a foothold in the cable market at all. The specter of iTunes’ musical dominance looms large and the WSJ’s sources say Apple has yet to sign a deal with even a single cable operator.

Rumor: Apple Prepping 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display

You didn’t really think you could go a whole week without an Apple rumor did you? Hot on the heels of the debut of its 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display, a whole new rumor surrounding Apple’s MacBook line surfaced today. 

According to AppleInsider, which received a tip from KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is working on a new 13-inch MacBook pro with Retina Display that will be launched this October. AppleInsider says Kuo has a solid history of accurately predicting Apple’s moves including being the first to point to Apple’s decision to phase out the 17-inch MacBook Pro and to continuing selling the standard 15-inch MacBook Pro along with the new 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display.

Kuo says the new 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display will feature a screen resolution of 2,5600 x 1,600 and that its display will be a drop thinner than the one attached to the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display. 

Other tidbits, Kuo dropped about the rumored 13-inch Pro include the fact it will, like the 15-inch Pro forgo the use of an optical drive, relying instead on an SSD, and that the new Pro will feature an Intel Ivy Bridge processor with a clock speed of more than 2 GHz and an integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics chip.

That means that the 13-inch Pro should come in at a slightly more wallet friendly price than its big brother, the 15-inch Pro, which features a 2.3-GHz quad-core Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM and an Nvidia GeForce GT 650M discrete graphics chip.

Rumor: Amazon Developing New Kindle Tablets, eReaders

Is Amazon gearing up to release a new Kindle Fire? Well, if DigiTimes is to be believed, the answer is yes. According to the website, Amazon could launching new eReaders and 7-inch tablets by the third-quarter of 2012. 

DigiTimes, citing, “sources from the upstream supply chain,” says Amazon will release a new $199 7-inch tablet with a display resolution of 1,280 x 800 that will be geared toward high-end consumers. The company will then release a second 7-inch tablet with a display resolution of 1,024 x 600 and priced at $149 that would be targeted at entry-level consumers.

DigiTimes says Amazon is also working on an 8.9-inch and 10.1-inch tablet, although the 8.9-inch has reportedly been put on hold for now. The 10.1-inch could hit the market by late 2012, early 2013.

In addition to the rumored tablet releases, DigiTimes says that Amazon is working on a 6-inch eReader with a built-in backlight that could reach the market between the third-quarter of 2012 and the first-quarter of 2013. A backlit eReader would make sense for Amazon considering the fact that Barnes & Noble already offers a backlit reader in the form of its Nook SimpleTouch with GlowLight.

Rumor: Apple Plans $249 to $299 “iPad mini” for 3rd Quarter Launch

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard speculation about the fabled iPad mini, but now rumors are really starting to heat up. The latest in the undying string of tales? Supposedly, Apple is planning to produce 6 million smaller iPads to go on sale by the third quarter of this year.

This tidbit comes from Chinese site NetEase, who also surmised that the diminutive Apple tablet would “counter attack” the upcoming slew of Windows 8 tablets. Allegedly, the device will cost between $249 and $299, and Foxconn and Pegatron will be manufacturing the tablet for Apple.

Though multiple Apple analysts previously weighed in that a smaller iPad could be a great thing for Apple, allowing the company to dabble in the smaller tablet market and to directly compete with Amazon’s hugely popular Kindle Fire, there’s no guarantee that a pint-sized iPad will ever go on sale. It’s more than likely that the iPad mini exists as a prototype somewhere inside the Cupertino stronghold, but since rumors of a smaller version of the iPad have been swirling since Apple’s first launch of the product — all the way back in early 2010 — who’s to say for certain that the iPad mini will ever see the light of day?

iPad 3 Rumor Roundup: 8 Things You Need to Know

Will it have a Retina display? 4G? Quad-core power? And what about Siri? There’s a lot of speculation surrounding the impending launch of the iPad 3. According to reports, Apple’s eagerly anticipated sequel could launch and go on sale as soon as the first week of March. With so many rumors swirling about this slate, it’s hard to know what features will make it into the final product. Remember the iPhone 5 hype? Still, that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun to review what has been said thus far. Here’s a quick recap.

Japanese publication Macotakara (as reported in English by 9to5mac) wrote that Apple would unveil the iPad 3 in early February, citing sources in the company's supply chain. All Things D recently had a different story, reporting that Apple will instead unveil the tablet the first week of March. Bolstering that claim are reports from iMore that Apple will hold a press event on Wednesday, March 7 and from Bloomberg that the tablet will hit the market by March.
