Motorola May Launch a Phablet and a Smartwatch in 2015

Motorolla-X-hands-On-G06

Motorola could be the next manufacturer to jump into the phablet game. Just days after Lenovo purchased the company’s mobile division from Google, reports are suggesting that a 6-inch phone, a Moto X successor and a smartwatch are all in Motorola’s 2015 lineup.

According to a recent post in China’s Sina Weibo forum, the next-generation Moto X is already in development. The blog doesn’t go into much detail, however. Lenovo’s ownership over Motorola Mobility isn’t expected to change the customization options available for the Moto X, the post notes.

The author behind the blog is said to be a reliable source that leaked correct information about the Moto X and Moto G prior to their respective launches, PhoneArena says. It’s unclear exactly what the future holds for both Motorola and Lenovo, but we would love to see a Vibe Z-esque phablet with Motorola’s clean Android UI and touchless voice controls in the future.

Report: Shipping Crews Staffing Up for Sept. 21 iPhone 5 Launch

The iPhone 5 puzzle pieces are finally starting to fall into place, and it looks as though the finished picture will look pretty close to what we’ve expected. Today’s tidbit: the phone’s launch date. Apple has already sent out event invites sporting a suspicious-looking shadow for September 12th, which will very likely be the day the iPhone 5 is unveiled to the world. But when will the finished product actually end up in our hands?

Apple fanatics might want to clear their schedule on September 21st. GottaBeMobile spoke to “a trusted source familiar with Apple’s iPhone shipping plans” who claims that shippers are staffing up for that day in anticipation of the first major wave of iPhone preorder fulfillments.

The website claims that cellular carriers and retail stores will also start selling the iPhone on that day, which is backed by earlier reports that both AT&T and Verizon have scheduled vacation blackouts on the 21st. T-Mobile, however, looks as though it won’t be hopping on the Apple bandwagon this time around, either.

Rumors peg the iPhone 5 as having a 4-inch 16:9 display, 4G LTE and NFC functionality, a unibody Liquidmetal design and a shrunk-down dock connector, along with iOS 6.

Nokia Lumia 920 Could Launch November 2nd

After getting our hands on the brand new Nokia Lumia 920 earlier this week, we couldn’t help but think that this could be the flagship device that Windows Phones — and Nokia, for that matter — so desperately needs. The one big problem: this flagship doesn’t have an actual launch date. When will people be able to pick one up at the store? Nokia’s kept mum, but its industry partners have given us a general idea.

An executive at an eastern European cellular carrier told Reuters that the Lumia 920 would touch down on his network during the latter half of November, though he also said that larger countries will launch the Windows 8 handset earlier in the month. The Verge’s sources narrowed that down to a potential November 2nd launch date on AT&T in the U.S.

The delay could hurt Nokia in the short run, the executive who spoke to Reuters opined. “The problem is that Nokia has temporarily destroyed the market for its own phones. Nobody will buy the old Windows phone and until the new Lumia comes, the market is absolutely dead.”

Nokia managed to undercut Apple when it came to announcing its new handset, but if the rumored September 21st street launch date for the iPhone 5 holds true, that means Apple’s flagship phone could be in people’s hands for over a full month prior to the Lumia 920's actual launch. The Android market is also looking packed, with the LG Intuition, Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and a trio of new Droid RAZR phones being just the tip of the iceberg.

Windows Phones have an uphill battle against competition like that, but the beautiful and innovative Lumia 920 might just have a fighting chance. We’ll know for sure when a review model winds up in our offices.

There’s still no word on the Lumia 920's pricing details.

How to Launch Apps from The Desktop in Windows 8

Windows 7 Start Menu vs Windows 8 Start Screen

Because Microsoft really wants you to use its new “Modern” UI, the company removed the Start button from the desktop, forcing users to go back to the tile-based Start screen to launch desktop apps. So, if you’re working in Excel and then need to launch PowerPoint, you need to leave the desktop, go to the Start screen and then click the PowerPoint tile, which will drop you back on the desktop again. And if the PowerPoint tile isn’t pinned to the Start screen, you have to either perform a search for it or click another two times to get to the All Apps menu.

Not only does switching screens take more time than simply launching a menu, it takes you out of context by pushing your work in the first application off-screen, making it easy to lose track of what you were doing.

Fortunately, there are several ways to avoid going through the Start screen every time you want to launch a new desktop application.

A number of developers have built their own desktop menu programs which look and feel a lot like Microsoft’s old Windows 7. Our favorite of these is Classic Shell, which provides a ton of options and even lets you bypass the Start Screen on boot up, reassign the Windows key to launch it and disable hot corners so you don’t accidentally go back to the tiled menu when you hover over the lower left section of the screen.

Classic ShellPin Applications To the Taskbar

As with Windows 7, you can right click on any shortcut or tile for a desktop app and select Pin to Taskbar. Pin to Taskbar

Every time you roll your mouse pointer anywhere, you’re wasting precious seconds of your life. The fastest way to launch any program is to assign it to a Ctrl + Alt + Key combination. To assign a keyboard shortcut, you must right click on a shortcut, select properties and then fill in the Shortcut key field under the Shortcut tab.Create a Shortcut Key in Windows 8If a desktop app doesn’t have a shortcut visible on the desktop, you must find it on the Start screen or in search, right click and select Open File Location. You will then see a shortcut icon for it appear in Explorer.

RadioShack May Launch A No-Contract Wireless Service Sept. 5

Pretty soon, people who bellyache about restrictive plan changes and high fees imposed by the major carriers could have yet another way to connect. According to Engadget, RadioShack may be planning to roll out its own no-contract wireless service of its own on September 5th, supplementing the electronics company’s current ability to offer phones and plans for the Verizon, AT&T and Sprint networks.

A screenshot sent in by an anonymous tipster claims that the cleverly named RadioShack No-Contract Wireless plans will be powered by Cricket’s wireless network. In a ploy to differentiate itself from other Cricket Wireless distributors, RadioShack apparently plans to offer a free 8GB SD card with any phone that comes with the carrier’s Muve Music service preloaded — assuming the leak is legitimate, of course.

Previous leaks reported by Engadget suggest that RadioShack’s no-contract service will include several phone options, including all the phones currently being carried by Cricket along with the HTC One V, the Huawei Mercury, the Huawei Pillar and a 4.3-inch offering by Alcatel.

If the information turns out to be true, September 5th is going to be a busy day for the mobile world. In addition to RadioShack No-Contract Wireless’s launch, Nokia and Microsoft are holding an event where they are widely expected to announce the first Windows Phone 8 devices. Motorola and Verizon also have a big event scheduled that day, which could be the official unveiling of the Motorola Droid RAZR HD.

Rumor: Apple Plans $249 to $299 “iPad mini” for 3rd Quarter Launch

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard speculation about the fabled iPad mini, but now rumors are really starting to heat up. The latest in the undying string of tales? Supposedly, Apple is planning to produce 6 million smaller iPads to go on sale by the third quarter of this year.

This tidbit comes from Chinese site NetEase, who also surmised that the diminutive Apple tablet would “counter attack” the upcoming slew of Windows 8 tablets. Allegedly, the device will cost between $249 and $299, and Foxconn and Pegatron will be manufacturing the tablet for Apple.

Though multiple Apple analysts previously weighed in that a smaller iPad could be a great thing for Apple, allowing the company to dabble in the smaller tablet market and to directly compete with Amazon’s hugely popular Kindle Fire, there’s no guarantee that a pint-sized iPad will ever go on sale. It’s more than likely that the iPad mini exists as a prototype somewhere inside the Cupertino stronghold, but since rumors of a smaller version of the iPad have been swirling since Apple’s first launch of the product — all the way back in early 2010 — who’s to say for certain that the iPad mini will ever see the light of day?
