Best Laptops of March 2012

Some notebooks boast a long battery life, others stand out with an innovative design and still others make waves with their hard drive and memory. But finding a notebook that has all these features-and-more is tricky. In our reviews, we take design, keyboard, heat, ports, display, audio, performance, battery life, security, software and price into account, then size up a laptop’s rating out of five stars. And to get a decent score-well, that’s easier said than done. Read on to see which laptops made it to the top of the heap out of all those reviewed in March.

This notebook gives business users everything they need: fast boot times, a great keyboard, a high-resolution display and extra-long battery life. We wish Lenovo made the touchpad a bit bigger and the design a bit less bulky, but this 15.6-inch ThinkPad T520 ($1,299) is made for any business user who needs a system stocked with power and efficiency features.

This Week in Reviews [March 26-30]

Happy Saturday! Time to kick back and enjoy this week’s reviews. This week, we got our hands on the compact but snappy Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G from T-Mobile, the budget-friendly ZTE Fury from Sprint, the sub-$600 Toshiba Satellite L745 laptop, a wireless DVD player/external hard drive from Samsung, an app called Snapseed that gives you a suite of touch-based photo editing tools, 4 alarm clock docking stations for your smartphone, and an inexpensive room-monitoring camera called the iZon.

Not everyone is looking for a big-screen phone like the Samsung Galaxy S II. The Galaxy S Blaze 4G for T-Mobile has a smaller display (3.9 inches versus 4.5 inches) and smaller price ($149 versus $229) than its big brother. But can Samsung shrink the dimensions of its flagship phone without sacrificing the power and performance consumers have come to expect?

This Week in Reviews [March 19-23]

This week we reviewed the new iPad from Apple, a contract-less 4G phone from MetroPCS, 4 pairs of premium headphones, a convertible laptop from Dell, the sleekest 15-inch Ultrabook we’ve ever seen from Samsung, a 4G hotspot from NetZero, the sequel to Rovio’s incredibly popular “Angry Birds” — in SPAAAAACCCEEEEE!! — and more remote-access apps than you can shake a stick at.

Look ma, no contract! The $319 LG Connect 4G, MetroPCS's flagship phone, plans to dispel the prepaid stereotypes with a 3-punch combo of 4G LTE speeds, a 1.2-GHz dual-core processor and affordable, no-commitment data plans. You can literally save a grand versus the competition over two years. But will you be happy living with this Android 2.3 smartphone?

This Week in Reviews [March 12-16]

This week we reviewed three different sets of custom earbuds, the rugged Samsung Rugby Smart, an iDevice that allows you to make FaceTime calls hands-free, five wireless routers, the new $199 Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet, and four laptops — the ASUS EeePC 1025C Flare netbook, the last of a dying breed; the ultra-sleek HP Envy 14 Spectre, which boasts a glass lid and palm rest; the Acer Aspire TimelineX, which packs a ton of power but costs less than $750; and the Acer Aspire Ultra M3, the first Ultrabook to boast discrete graphics. Read on to find out what we thought of each.

While it has a long history making audio equipment, it's taken Altec Lansing a while to develop its own line of custom-fit earbuds. The company's first effort, the $499 A1 Custom Single Driver Earphone, is a solid one, offering a great fit and well-balanced sound.

This Week in Reviews [March 5-9]

Welcome to the weekend! Time to kick back and enjoy this week’s reviews. This week, we saw two portable projectors (one from ASUS and the other from ViewSonic), Sony’s split-screen Tablet P, the small business ThinkPad T520 from Lenovo, the super-thin Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, the remarkable light-but-powerful Sony VAIO SE, a powerful video editing tool from Corel and a unique phone-controlled ball called the Sphero. Read on to find out what we thought of each.

There's a reason a lot of people don't leave home with their tablets. They're just not very portable. Enter Sony's Tablet P, which is more compact than the iPad and your typical Android slate because it packs two 5.5-inch screens inside a unique clamshell design. To keep you connected beyond your abode, the Tablet P connects to AT&T's HSPA network as well as Wi-Fi. Sony also provides access to its music, video and book services to keep you entertained, as well as PlayStation games. But at $399 with a two-year contract ($549 without), is the Tablet P as compelling after the novelty wears off?

New iPad Coming March 16th for $499: Retina Display, A5X Chip, 4G LTE

The new iPad is all about the eye candy. The new device sports a new Retina display with a whopping 2048 x 1536 pixels with 44 percent greater color saturation. (That’s a lot more than 1080p HDTVs.) It also packs a new A5X quad-core graphics chip to power that cutting-edge display and a new iSight camera that can shoot 1080p video at up to 30 fps. The device goes on sale March 16th starting on $499.

While Siri doesn’t seem to be on board, the new iPad supports voice dictation capability that’s fast and accurate. As expected, the new iPad features 4G LTE speeds in addition to 3G. You’ll also be able to roam globally with the tablet. Apple promises up to 10 hours of battery life.

Apple is touting that plenty of apps are coming to take advantage of the Retina display, including the new iWork apps for $9.99 each. New games are coming too, such as Infinity Blade Dungeons, which looks amazing. An updated version of the GarageBand apps lets tablet musicians collaborate with up to four other artists. Pretty sweet. An updated iMovie makes editing full HD video a breeze. A new iPhoto app ($4.99) completes the picture with intuitive multi-touch editing.

The new iPad starts at $499 for 16GB, $599 for 32GB and $699 for 64GB. The 4G version will start at $629.

Report: iPad 3 to Launch March 7th, Apple Developing 8-Inch Tablet

It’s really getting down to the wire for the iPad 3. We all know that Apple’s next tablet is set to launch in early March, but now the website iMore has a specific date for that much-anticipated event: March 7th. That date falls in line with previous reports from the Wall Street Journal and other sources.

Apple hasn’t even unveiled the iPad 3, but that doesn’t stop the tablet rumor mill from churning out new gossip about products further down the pipeline. The WSJ spoke to sources at Apple’s suppliers who say that the company is developing a smaller tablet with a screen size of about 8 inches.

Clearly, a more compact iPad would help Apple compete against Samsung’s Galaxy Tab and Amazon’s Kindle Fire, both of which are available in smaller screen sizes than the iPad’s 9.7 inches. But let’s tackle one thing at a time: The iPad 3 is on the horizon, and that’s plenty exciting in and of itself.

Latest on the iPad 3: Dual-Core (Not Quad-Core) CPU, Bigger Battery, and March Unveil Date

iPad 3 leaked photos of casing

Apple’s iPad 3 announcement is imminent, so it’s no surprise that firmer details on that tablet are surfacing. At least according to sources who spoke to The Verge, hopes for a quad-core iPad may be a bit too lofty. Instead, the next tablet could run a dual-core processor like its predecessor.

More news comes from Cult of Mac, which posted leaked images of the tablet’s internal components. The photos, provided by UK iDevice repair specialist iPatch, indicate that the iPad 3's inside are quite different from what’s under the iPad 2's hood. The design of components such as the cable for the volume, wake/sleep, and mute buttons is significantly changed, though the photos don’t indicate that the iPad 3 will look dramatically different from the iPad 2 on the outside. Most interesting, though, is that it looks like the iPad 3 is designed to accommodate a larger battery.

One more update to your ever-changing iPad 3 forecast: Don’t count on that announcement happening in February. As we previously reported, it’s been widely expected that Apple will unveil the tablet early this month and release it in March, but All Things D reports that the iPad 3 will happen the first week of March.
