It's been just a few weeks since the launch of Linux Mint 14 “Nadia,” but already the project behind the popular distribution has been making plans for its next release.

In fact, last week project lead Clement Lefebvre laid out a roadmap for Linux Mint 15, whose nickname is still to be decided.

Linux Mint has remained at the top of DistroWatch's page hit rankings for the past year or so, making its next version a topic of widespread interest.

Ready for a rundown? Here are three features we can expect to see in Linux Mint 15.

1. Cinnamon 1.8

It's already been a full year since the launch of the GNOME 2-like Cinnamon desktop environment, and the next version of Linux Mint will use Cinnamon 1.8.

Included along with that popular desktop will be desklets, or desktop widgets, such as for system monitor, terminal, and picture, video, and slideshow frame; themes with configurable color schemes; calendar events similar to those in KDE; and new applets including an email notifier and an RSS reader similar to Pulse.

Also coming will be bump maps and a control center governing settings for both Cinnamon and GNOME properties, among other features.

2. Nemo 1.8

Cinnamon's default Nemo file manager, a fork of Nautilus, will be upgraded to version 1.8 in the next Linux Mint release, according to the roadmap. Along with it will come an action API, disk management, file preview capabilities, and user interface improvements.

3. MDM 1.2

Version 1.2 of the Mint Display Manager (MDM), meanwhile, will bring new capabilities as well. Themes, for example, will be able to have borders around text fields.

Other new features coming in Linux Mint 15 include user interface improvements for software management and the live installer as well as a new screensaver and driver manager.

Based on Ubuntu, Linux Mint issues new releases twice a year. The current version, “Nadia,” was rolled out in November.

Samsung Teases Windows 8 Hybrid Tablet, Coming to IFA 2012

Samsung may have just suffered a billion dollar blow at the hands of Apple, but if an intriguing teaser is any indication, at least one of the company’s upcoming products won’t have to worry about being accused of being an iPad rip-off. A post on Samsung Notebook’s Facebook page shows a Windows 8 tablet sitting atop notebook keyboard, indicating the company is gearing up to officially announce a hybrid device at the IFA 2012 trade show that starts Friday.

“Don’t worry, it’s just around the corner…” the post teases, but what exactly is “it?” It very well could be the Samsung Series 5 Hybrid the company showed us earlier in the year. The Samsung Series 5 Hybrid’s keyboard attaches to the tablet portion at the hinge using a magnetic connector, allowing you to easily remove the tablet portion alone for less cumbersome transportation when you only need a slate. The design may sound somewhat questionable, but the magnetic connection felt very secure during our short time with the Hybrid. Most hybrid Windows 8 devices we’ve seen use a physical latch instead.

When we visited the company in Korea earlier this year, Samsung told us it plans to offer two variations of the Samsung Series 5 Hybrid, one with a smartphone-type processor and another with an Intel ULV CPU. Each will sport a touch-tastic 11.6-inch display, but only the model with the ULV processor will include a true 1080p HD screen.

Is this the teaser for the Samsung Series 5 Hybrid or are we barking up the wrong tree entirely? We’ll know later in the week when IFA 2012 kicks off. We’ll be at the event to bring you coverage straight from the show floor.

5-inch LG Optimus Vu Phablet Could be Coming to Verizon as LG Intuition

If you like your phones big and your cellular carrier’s nationwide network even bigger, you’ll be happy to hear that your phablet options are about to double. According to Droid Life, the Optimus Vu — LG’s long-awaited (and massive) Samsung Galaxy Note competitor — should hit Verizon stores sometime in the coming weeks, sporting a 5-inch screen and a brand new name: the LG Intuition.

Droid Life’s source passed a long a screenshot that shows a blurb for the phone, referenced as the Intuition and sporting a $199.99 on-contract or $549.99 off-contract price tag.

Curiously, the listing doesn’t include any mention of a stylus. When we went hands-on with the Optimus Vu in February, it packed an included pen, though we noticed that there wasn’t any place to actually store it in the phone itself.

LG has yet to confirm that the Optimus Vu/Intuition is coming to U.S. shores, much less talk about spec details, but the Korean version sports a 5-inch IPS screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio and 1024×768 resolution. Presumably that will stay the same in a U.S. release, though it would make sense for LG to replace the overseas Optimus Vu’s older dual-core Qualcomm processor with a new and improved CPU. Qualcomm’s own Snapdragon S4 processor, with its integrated 4G LTE radio, would be a likely replacement choice.

Samsung is expected to announce its follow-up to the Galaxy Note, the cleverly named Galaxy Note 2, on August 29th at IFA Berlin.

Report: LG Optimus Vu Tablet Phone Coming to Verizon

The market for phablets (phone/ tablet) has been severely limited her in the U.S. So far as the only real option consumers have is the Samsung Galaxy Note for AT&T and, as of today, T-Mobile. But if you’re a Sprint or Verizon Wireless, you’re currently out of luck. Fortunately, for Verizon customers at least, that looks like it’s about to change.

Android Police is reporting that they’ve gotten their hands on a Verizon-branded version of LG’s Optimus Vu. Measuring a massive 5-inches, the Optimus Vu sports a 1024 x 768 HD IPS display with a decidedly box-like 4:3 aspect ratio. We spent some time with the Optimus Vu back in February during Mobile World Congress and were blown away by the display’s brightness.

Beyond its display, the Optimus Vu features a 1.5-Ghz dual-core Snapdragon S3 processor, 1GB of RAM, 32GB of storage space, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. The original Optimus Vu came preloaded with Google’s Android Gingerbread operating system, but Android Police say that the Verizon version will instead come loaded with Android Ice Cream Sandwich. Also on tap for the Verizon version, 4G LTE.

No word yet on when the Optimus Vu will touchdown on Verizon.

LTE-Capable LG Lucid Coming to Verizon for $80

Get ready, folks; there’s a new Verizon LTE  smartphone in town. The carrier just announced the LG Lucid, which will ship with Android Gingerbread 2.3 but get the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade in due time.

The curiously named Lucid (we wonder if LG took a few spins with the Android Name Generator) sports a 4-inch Gorilla Glass touchscreen and a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera capable of shooting 1080p video (Verizon says you’ll be able to edit your footage directly on the phone). The dual-core processor runs at 1 GHz, and you get 1GB—for the mid-range price of $79.99 after mail-in rebate.

You won’t have to wait long to pick up the LG Lucid if you so desire; it’s dropping at Verizon stores just two days from now, on March 29th.

New iPad Coming March 16th for $499: Retina Display, A5X Chip, 4G LTE

The new iPad is all about the eye candy. The new device sports a new Retina display with a whopping 2048 x 1536 pixels with 44 percent greater color saturation. (That’s a lot more than 1080p HDTVs.) It also packs a new A5X quad-core graphics chip to power that cutting-edge display and a new iSight camera that can shoot 1080p video at up to 30 fps. The device goes on sale March 16th starting on $499.

While Siri doesn’t seem to be on board, the new iPad supports voice dictation capability that’s fast and accurate. As expected, the new iPad features 4G LTE speeds in addition to 3G. You’ll also be able to roam globally with the tablet. Apple promises up to 10 hours of battery life.

Apple is touting that plenty of apps are coming to take advantage of the Retina display, including the new iWork apps for $9.99 each. New games are coming too, such as Infinity Blade Dungeons, which looks amazing. An updated version of the GarageBand apps lets tablet musicians collaborate with up to four other artists. Pretty sweet. An updated iMovie makes editing full HD video a breeze. A new iPhoto app ($4.99) completes the picture with intuitive multi-touch editing.

The new iPad starts at $499 for 16GB, $599 for 32GB and $699 for 64GB. The 4G version will start at $629.

ASUS Shows Off PadFone: Phone, Tablet, Netbook Combo Coming In April

After nearly a year’s worth of anticipation, and several early showings, ASUS at last showed off the final version of its PadFone. The device combines the power of a phone, tablet and netbook in one product. At its heart the PadFone is a 4.3-inch smartphone powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon S4 1.5-Ghz dual-core processor. The Android Ice Cream Sandwich device is available with 16GB/32GB/64GB of memory and 1GB of RAM.

Upfront the phone features a Super AMOLEDqHD display with a 960 x 540 resolution. Seated above the display is the PadFone’s front-facing camera, a standard VGA model, and opposite that, on the rear of the device, is its 8-megapixel rear-facing camera. ASUS says the PadFone will initially launch as an HSPA+ model, however, an LTE version is due out in Q3 2012.

Pop the Padfone into the PadFone Station and the phone turns into a 10.1-inch tablet. ASUS touts its DynamicDisplay technology as the force behind the way the phone display can be seamlessly transferred to the tablet’s 1280 x 1000 display. The PadFone Station isn’t just a larger display either. It also includes a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, as well as microUSB and microHDMI ports.

The PadFone Station is also available with an optional keyboard dock that turns the entire unit into a 10.1-inch netbook. By itself the PadFone weighs 4.6 ounces and measures just 5 x 2.6 x 0.4 inches. The PadFone Station ups that further, weighing 1.6 pounds and measuring 10.7 x 7 x 0.5 inches.

Rounding out the package is an ASUS’s new PadFone Stylus Headset, a Bluetooth stylus that also doubles as a receiver for the PadFone. So if you are using the unit as a tablet or netbook, and get a phone call you can use the stylus to answer you call, rather than taking the entire setup apart.

Stay tuned for our full hands on of the PadFone.

Microsoft: Windows 8 on ARM Coming Soon with Office 15 Support

Microsoft has demonstrated that its upcoming Windows 8 operating system will work on ARM-based processors many times in the last few months, but the company has been mum on when that version of the software will be available for testing and what kind of apps it will run. Now, we have more details.

In a post at the company’s Building Windows 8 blog, software president Stephen Sinofsky said not only does the manufacturer intend to release Windows 8 on ARM devices at the same time as Windows 8 for x86/64 chips, he also said Windows 8 for ARM will support desktop versions of familiar Microsoft apps, including versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Internet Explorer 10.

Until today’s post, there had been some debate about just how Microsoft would support its familiar Office software in the Windows 8 for ARM interface. Many figured the software would run only the Metro interface (just like Windows 8 for x86/64 chips), but it now looks as though Office 15 will also support a non-Metro, desktop-like UI. Other prominent features of the desktop Windows ecosystem, including File Explorer, Internet 10 and other OS components, will also work in desktop-like interfaces on Windows 8 ARM devices.

Earlier this week, Microsoft announced a public demo of Windows 8 at the Mobile World Congress convention in Barcelona, Spain on February 29. It is expected that a beta of x86/64 OS called Windows 8 Consumer Preview will be released afterwards. There’s still no specific time frame for Windows 8 on ARM, but it looks like that beta release won’t come long after.
