The Average PC Laptop Cost $513 in February

According to new data released by research group NPD, the average notebook purchased in Feburary 2012 cost just $513, down slightly from January’s $527 average, but up dramatically from December’s low of $456. The average cost of all notebooks, which includes MacBooks, was $672 in February, lower than January’s mark of $724 but much higher than December’s $631 mark.

According to NPD Vice President of Industry Analysis Stephen Baker attributed the dramatic rise in average prices since December to seasonality, saying that holiday sales always artificially deflate the averages in late Q4. However, the PC average is actually higher than February 2011's $481 average, but nearly identical to February 2010's $512 average.

November 2011 marked the lowest average PC notebook price ever with a mark of just $407, due in large part to Black Friday and other holiday sales. That month also saw the lowest average laptop price ever (including MacBooks) at just $560.

How much PC notebook can you get for February’s average of $513? Typical specs for a sub-$500 notebook include a Core i3 CPU, 4GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive. You can even, on sale, sometimes get a Core i5, 6GB of RAM, or a 500GB hard drive in this price range.  This week it was all laptops, all the time. When you're one of the last to enter a new category, you better make sure your laptop brings something fresh. Dell has done just that with its XPS 13 Ultrabook. Starting at $999, this 3-pound machine is one of the smallest of its ilk, and has some neat innovations, such as Smart Connect technology for downloading email and social networking updates when the lid is closed. Add to that a blazing-fast SSD and a great backlit keyboard, and you have the makings of a great ultraportable. Is this the best Ultrabook yet?

Windows 8 Consumer Preview Slated for February 29

We just got our invitation to Microsoft’s debutante ball in Spain for Windows 8 beta– dubbed Windows 8 Consumer Preview–which will take place on February 29th during Mobile World Congress and will hopefully culminate in the release of a public beta of Windows 8. Though the OS will still need some primping and preening before it’s official release later this year, it’ll give the general public a chance to dance with the new Metro user interface, the same interface overlay that’s currently on Windows Phone. 

Microsoft has stated that their goal with Windows 8 is to optimize the tablet experience while still providing the power and versatility needed for desktop users. Users will be able to purchase apps from the Windows Store for simplified software installation across a variety of devices. We got a hands-on look at the developer preview of Windows 8 and came away impressed not only by the operating system’s touch capabilities, but also by how well it handled on a traditional laptop. 

LAPTOP will be at Windows 8 Consumer Preview’s debut at Mobile World Congress in Spain later this month, so stay tuned.

Motorola Droid 4 To Land on Verizon February 10 for $199

We first saw the Motorola Droid 4 at CES at the beginning of this year and were delighted by its springy, edge-lit keyboard, so we’re quite excited about the announcement that comes to us this morning, care of Verizon Wireless: The Motorola Droid 4 will be available this Friday, February 10 for $199.99 on a two-year contract.

The Droid 4 is run by a 1.2-GHz processor and features an 8-MP camera with 1080p video capture and 16 GB of internal memory, expandable via microSD. Unfortunately, keyboard-lovers are left behind the technology curve again when it comes to display technology. In a world where many of today’s top phones have 1280 x 720 displays with gorgeous colors and wide viewing angles, this slider sports a standard, 4-inch qHD (540×960 pixel) screen. It also has narrower viewing angles — but viewed straight on, the display is decent enough.

To target business users, the Droid 4 comes equipped with mirror mode support using HDMI output, and boasts compatibility with Motorola’s Lapdock accessories to let you turn your smartphone into a full notebook (for a price). Like the Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx, the Droid 4 comes with Smart Actions software (which lets you conserve the device’s juice) and MotoCast (for streaming content from your PC to your smartphone).

This is no Droid RAZR with a keyboard, but it does fill in the void where Motorola has disappointed in the past. The Droid 3 didn’t let you access Verizon’s 4G LTE network; this phone does. The Samsung Stratosphere was supposedly the answer to that problem, but that phone had a slow-moving single core CPU and only an 800 x 480 screen.

With its dual-core CPU and qHD screen, the Droid 4 promises to be the most powerful keyboarded phone on the market. We’ll let you know if this is indeed the case when we get our mitts on the product and review it.
