ASUS Unveils 15-inch Zenbook U500VZ Notebook With Nvidia Graphics, Dual SSDs

Proving that slim does not mean underpowered, ASUS today took the wraps off the Zenbook U500VZ, a powerful 15-inch notebook that’s just .77-inches thick, but packs a bevvy of high-end specs such as a quad-core Core i7 CPU, optional Nvidia GT650M graphics and a variety of storage options that includes dual SSDs.  With a full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS anti-glare display and a backlit keyboard with number pad, the Zenbook U500VZ should appeal to content creators, gamers and  anyone who craves plenty of portable power.

With its aluminum shell and “hairline” finish, the U500VZ is designed for style, not just raw performance. However, ASUS is not calling the Zenbook U500VZ an Ultrabook and did not mention weight in its press materials so we don’t know yet how this notebook will stack up against other ultraportable 15-inchers like the MacBook Pro with Retina Display and Samsung Series 9 15-inch. The company claims that the U500VZ’s battery life is “impressive” and that its Super Hybrid II software, which controls system speed, will provide 25 percent longer battery life “when it’s needed most.” We’ll put these claims to the test when we get the notebook in for review.

ASUS hasn’t released pricing or availability information on the U500VZ, but we suspect it will be available in time for the holidays. The notebook will come in several different configurations, some of which will have dual SSDs with up to 512GB of storage and others of which will have a single SSD paired with a hard drive. Some configurations will have Nvidia GT650M graphics while others will not.

Boost Mobile Unveils No-Contract Samsung Galaxy S II and Galaxy Rush

The world of no-contract phones just got a little more high end. Boost Mobile in conjunction with Samsung unveiled the latest additions to the Boost Mobile line-up, the Samsung Galaxy S II 4G and the new Samsung  Galaxy Rush. This marks the first time the Galaxy S II will be offered in the United States without a contract.

Running on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), the Galaxy Rush features a 1GHz  Qualcomm CPU MSM8655 CPU, 3.5-inch display, a full 3 megapixel rear-facing camera and 1.3 megapixel camera. Available sometime in late September, the Samsung Galaxy Rush will retail for $149. The Galaxy S II 4G will retail on September 6 for $369 in black and white. 

The announcement comes on the heels of Boost Mobile debuting its $55 unlimited 4G data plans. Similar to other Boost Mobile devices, both the Galaxy S II 4G and the Galaxy Rush fall under the carrier’s Shrinkage plan. Under the plan, customers will receive a $5 discount on their bill every 6 months for on time payments, eventually dropping the bill down to $40. The plan includes unlimited talk, text and data.

Acer Unveils Liquid Glow and CloudMobile Smartphones

Just in time for Mobile World Congress, Acer has revealed two new Ice Cream Sandwich-powered smartphones — the Liquid Glow and Acer’s new flagship phone, the CloudMobile. Feeling bilingual? Check out the video below (in Italian) of the CloudMobile in action.

According to Pocket-lint, the Liquid Glow runs Ice Cream Sandwich and is powered by a 1-GHz Qualcomm 7227A processor and 512MB of RAM, with 1GB of storage capacity. The phone features a 3.7-inch 800 x 400 WVGA display. Its 5-megapixel camera uses an LED flash and supports panoramic image capture and a touch focus. Owners can expect NFC support in the form of Android Beam, a file sharing app native to Ice Cream Sandwich. The Acer Liquid Glow measures 4.6 x 2.3 x 0.45 inches and weights 4.4 ounces, and will be available in Sakura Pink, Alpine White and Cat’s-eye black.

Fewer details are available about the CloudMobile, which has been described as Acer’s flagship smartphone. The CloudMobile apparently runs on Android 4.0, and boasts a 4.3-inch 1280 x 720 display, Dolby Mobile audio, and a svelte chassis less than 10 millimeters thick. According to Acer, the CloudMobile is the first phone to utilize Acer’s proprietary AcerCloud technology, which allows for “seamless document management.” Engadget writes that the CloudMobile is powered by a 1.5-GHz dual-core processor (the manufacturer wasn’t specified).

Acer demonstrated the CloudMobile at a press event in Milan, Italy. The folks at Cellular Magazine attended the event and shot a hands-on video with the device. Fair warning: The video is in Italian.

One Chip to Rule Them All: TI Unveils 5-in-1 WiLink 8.0 Chips

In an age when the typical smartphone functions as a wireless hotspot, digital wallet, GPS and FM radio all at the same time, manufacturers grapple with cramming an increasing number of radio chips into an ever-slimmer frame. Texas Instruments has been working to alleviate this burden, and Monday nnounced WiLink 8.0, its next generation of wireless chips for smartphones and other mobile devices.

WiLink 8.0 represents a breakthrough in wireless technology, as it integrates five radios — Wi-Fi, GPS, NFC, Bluetooth and FM — onto a single 45-nanometer chip. Texas Instruments boasts that mobile devices featuring WiLink 8.0 chips will cost 60% less, be 45% smaller and use 30% less power than comparable devices.

The company offers fifteen variations of the chip, with various configurations of radio capabilities. The most powerful chip, the WL 189x, offers all five radios on one chip. This flexibility, TI hopes, will allow manufacturers to use WiLink 8.0 chips on both high-end and low-end mobile devices.

Among the key features of the WiLink 8.0 chip family are Wi-Fi throughput speeds as high as 100 MBps on the 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz bands, allowing for the incredibly fast mobile streaming and HD mobile video; the world’s first integrated NFC controller; and a hybrid positioning system that blends GPS, Wi-Fi, ANT and NFC technology for hyper-accurate, “always-aware” positioning.

Texas Instruments is sampling WiLink 8.0 to top-tier mobile OEMs, and will demonstrate the technology at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona from February 27 to March 1. The company expects products featuring WiLink 8.0 chips to ships as early as the second half of 2012.
