HTC Desire 8 Reportedly Leaks With 5.5-inch Display, Mid-range Price

HTC may add a phablet to its mid-range smartphone lineup soon enough. A new leak provides a peek at the HTC Desire 8, a 5.5-inch device packing a 13-megapixel camera.

The leak comes courtesy of Chinese website MyDrivers, which also revealed that the dual-SIM phone will be available in white, red, yellow, orange and cyan. Like its flagship HTC One sibling, the Desire 8 is expected to come with front-facing stereo speakers. A 5-megapixel front-facing camera is also reportedly in tow according to Engadget, which claims to have received confirmation from unnamed sources.

Judging by the leaked image, the device will sport a clean buttonless design. If the information turns out to be accurate, the Desire 8 would be  the largest non-flagship phone in HTC’s lineup.

There’s no word on pricing, availability or additional specs such as display resolution or processor just yet, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see it debut at Mobile World Congress 2014. It’s also unclear if the Desire 8 will make it’s way to the US if, and when, it launches.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Hands-On: Mid-Range Android 4.0 Tablet Offers TouchWiz

Samsung has more tablets than a family-size bottle of aspirin and each one shoots for a particular niche. The new Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is clearly targeted at the middle of the market with a design change and a software update, but no real improvement in the hardware specs over last year’s Galaxy Tab 10.1. 

Like its predecesor, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 has a dual-core 1-GHz CPU (make and model not disclosed) and a 1280 x 800 screen. On the back side sits a measly 3-MP camera with a mere VGA front-facer. It has a gunmetal gray aesthetic instead of the all white one found on the Galaxy Tab 10.1, but its main difference is its Ice Cream Sandwich operating system.

Samsung has added some of its TouchWiz elements to the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. A small box-shaped icon that sits next to the layers button in the lower right corner of the screen and takes a screenshot when you tap it. When the screen shot appears you can scribble on it in different colors, just as you would on the Galaxy Note 10.1, only without a pen. 

There’s no word yet on pricing or availability for the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, but a Samsung rep explained that this is a “mass market device” that’s intended to hit a wider and therefore more value-conscious audience than the original Galaxy Tab 10.1. Hopefully, if this is the value option, Samsung also has a high-end device up its sleeve.
