Smartphone Madness 2012 Game 9: Huawei Ascend D Quad vs. Nokia Lumia 900. Voting Ends 3/23 at 9 a.m. EST

Like Norfolk State, the Huawei Ascend D Quad came out of nowhere to take down the highly seeded Apple iPhone 4S in the first round. First seen at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, this device has a quad-core, 64-bit CPU (the K3V2) and also packs 16 GPU cores, giving it that extra oomph needed to handle today’s demanding 3D games.

The Android 4.0 ice Cream Sandwich-powered Ascend D Quad features a huge 4.5-inch 1280 x 720-pixel display, Dolby Digital + 5.1 surround sound, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of onboard storage. But can this Cinderella keep the magic up for another round?

In the first round, the Nokia Lumia 900 defeated the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx. For those who don’t recall, the Lumia 900, Nokia’s new flagship Windows Phone, is expected to arrive on AT&T’s 4G LTE network. We like it so much we named it the best smartphone of CES 2012. It has a large 4.3-inch scree, and around back of this solid unibody design (available in cyan and black) is an 8-MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics, which fired shots quickly. Its secret weapon might just be the bundled free Nokia Drive GPS app.

Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the first game of the real madness of March, Smartphone Madness. For the first matchup of the competition we see the world’s most popular smartphone, Apple’s iPhone 4S, face off against an unknown, the Huawei Ascend D Quad. Who will win is all up to you. Apple’s iPhone 4S: All three versions of this smartphone earned 4 stars and an Editors’ Choice award. You really can’t go wrong with Apple’s smartphone, regardless of whether you’re on AT&T, Sprint or Verizon Wireless. In addition to Apple’s personal assistant Siri, the iPhone 4S includes a speedy dual-core A5 processor, a fast bright and sharp camera, iCloud baked in and the best arsenal of apps anywhere. But without iPhone fan support, this smartphone has little hope of defeating what’s being called the fastest smartphone ever.

Huawei Ascend D Quad: We first got excited by this rookie when we saw it at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Huawei calls its quad-core, 64-bit CPU the K3V2 and it packs 16 GPU cores, giving it that extra oomph needed to handle today’s demanding 3D games. The Android 4.0 ice Cream Sandwich-powered Ascend D Quad also features a 4.5-inch 1280 x 720-pixel display, Dolby Digital + 5.1 surround sound, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of onboard storage. But while this smartphone may have a mean fast break, its lack of experience could hurt it during this upcoming tourney.
