There’s plenty of room for improvement in the already-burgeoning childrens’ tablet space. Thankfully, it looks like we can expect safer kiddie slates in our future. Exhibit A: Oregon Scientific’s just-announced MEEP! tablet is an Android 4.0-based slate for children, which offers an intuitive interface along with some neat music and gaming accessories. What parents will love most about this tablet is its safety features: Cloud-based parental controls let mom and dad specify which websites their child can access and provide notifications each time the child adds a friend on the tablet’s chat application.
Geared toward kids ages six and up, the MEEP! has a 7-inch screen and is Wi-Fi-enabled. (There will be a MEEP! app store with content from yet-to-be-determined partners, but this is not yet live.) There’s 4GB of on-board memory, though an SD card slot ups that storage space to 32GB or 64GB.
The MEEP! will go on sale in August for an MSRP of $149. Oregon Scientific has developed a line of fun add-ons to complement the tablet, from a roll-up keyboard for playing music to a Nintendo-style game controller which fits around the MEEP!.
